Washington and Budapest seal two memorandums on energy and security. Here's what was signed and what comes next.

Key points

  • Two memorandums of understanding signed between the US and Hungary
  • One covers energy infrastructure and regional energy security; the other covers police cooperation and information sharing
  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán took part in the ceremony
  • The security agreement aims to track cross-border networks of political violence

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán signed two memorandums of understanding in Washington. The ceremony took place on October 29, 2026, in the Colin L. Powell Treaty Room at the State Department.

The first agreement focuses on countering what Rubio described as a resurgence of far-left terrorism. According to the secretary, groups that target police, critical infrastructure and historic landmarks operate through international networks. The memorandum aims to increase cooperation and information sharing to track these cross-border networks.

The second document is an energy infrastructure framework tied to what the State Department calls the "Trump Peace Pipelines." According to the State Department, the initiative was previously announced by Energy Secretary Chris Wright at the Three Seas Initiative Summit. Its goal is to meet Central Europe's energy needs with U.S. Energy and help diversify supply.

Rubio said the agreements reflect growing economic cooperation between the two countries. Orbán said the relationship could deepen not only in political matters but also in security, defense, nuclear issues and economic cooperation.
