Government Highlights RD$25 Billion in Agricultural Financing in 2025

Financing for the countryside topped RD$25 billion in 2025. What measures does the government's support for producers include?

Key points

  • More than RD$25 billion disbursed through the Banco Agrícola during 2025.
  • More than 19,000 producers benefited from that financing.
  • Fertilizer subsidy reactivated for 2026, with an investment of more than RD$2 billion.
  • Investments of over RD$200 million in machinery for mechanizing the countryside.

Jonathan Rivera, president of the Dominican Association of Landowners and Farmers (ADHA), highlighted the support of the government of President Luis Abinader for the agricultural sector. According to Rivera, more than RD$25 billion was disbursed through the Banco Agrícola during 2025, funds that allowed more than 19,000 producers to be financed.

The leader spoke during the presentation of the XXXV Medalla de Honor al Mérito, led this Thursday by President Abinader at a ceremony organized by the ADHA to recognize individuals linked to the development of agricultural production.

Rivera also welcomed the reactivation of the fertilizer subsidy for 2026, with an investment of more than RD$2 billion, aimed at reducing the impact of rising international prices of agricultural inputs. He also mentioned measures to contain oil price increases, which represented an effort of RD$11 billion in 2025 and exceeded RD$40 billion so far in 2026, he said.

On mechanization and infrastructure, he cited investments of more than RD$200 million in machinery and in construction and road improvement work on rural roads and paths, which facilitate the transport of products to markets.

Regarding rice, one of the main staples of the basic basket, Rivera expressed confidence in President Abinader's efforts to address international trade commitments and protect domestic production.

For his part, Agriculture Minister Francisco Oliverio Espaillat praised the efforts of producers and reaffirmed the government's commitment to promoting efficiency, technological innovation and generational renewal in the countryside. Espaillat called for encouraging young people to take part in agricultural activities.

Why it matters

The measures aim to cushion rising costs of agricultural inputs and could affect the availability and price of basic-basket foods.
