Indomet Warns of Downpours and Storms Across Several Regions; Greater Santo Domingo Under Alert

The Indomet forecasts heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in several regions, with Greater Santo Domingo and six provinces under weather alert.

Key points

  • Towering clouds will form from the afternoon into the early night.
  • Monte Plata, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, San Cristóbal, El Seibo, Hato Mayor and Greater Santo Domingo are under weather alert.
  • There is a risk of sudden urban flooding, river overflows and landslides.
  • Temperatures will stay hot because of warm winds from the south and southeast.

The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) reported that conditions will remain favorable for locally heavy downpours, thunderstorms and gusty winds in various parts of the country. The cause is a trough at several levels of the troposphere, combined with southeast winds and local effects.

From the morning, cloud cover will increase, bringing scattered moderate to heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms in areas near the south coast. The localities mentioned include La Altagracia, El Seibo, Hato Mayor, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, Greater Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Peravia, Azua, Barahona and Pedernales. From the afternoon into the early night, clouds with strong vertical development are expected to produce locally heavy downpours, thunderstorms, gusty winds and possible hail in provinces of the North, Northeast, the Cordillera Central, the Cibao Valley and the border zone.

The Indomet's National Forecast Center has changed its alert and warning levels for possible sudden urban flooding, overflows of rivers, streams and ravines, and landslides. Currently under weather alert are Monte Plata, La Vega, Monseñor Nouel, San Cristóbal, El Seibo, Hato Mayor and Greater Santo Domingo.

Temperatures will remain hot due to warm winds from the south and southeast. The agency recommended drinking plenty of water, wearing light, loose-fitting clothing in light colors, avoiding direct sun between 11:00 a.m. And 4:00 p.m. Without protection, and staying in cool, well-ventilated places. It reminded the public that children, older adults and pregnant women are the most vulnerable to the heat.

Although the swell has returned to normal on the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts, the Indomet urges operators of small and medium-sized boats to navigate with caution, due to reduced visibility, lightning, gusty winds and locally high waves that may occur during downpours. The institution urged the public to follow official bulletins and the recommendations of civil protection agencies.

Why it matters

If you live in Greater Santo Domingo or the provinces under alert, keep an eye on the rain and avoid areas near rivers and ravines. Because of the heat, the Indomet advises drinking plenty of water and avoiding direct sun between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. without protection.
